Weather It Is (When Will It End?)

Good Afternoon:

In a rather anguished voice my wife says: "When will it end?"  She meant, of course, the chilly weather that has driven her back to winter.

You see, my wife likes summer and I like winter, and this has always created a conflict in our marriage.  After all, how can married life be a happy life when one rejoices while the other does not?

Well, in the interest of wives everywhere, I can say that we've reached bottom.  By reaching bottom, I mean that there is only where to go but up.  The reason for the up will be high pressure building out of Africa, which will bring increasingly warm temperatures, without (almost -- no husband is perfect) interruption until Shabbat.  And while next Sunday may be a slight cooling, it should actually become quite hot by mid next week as low pressure expands northwestward from the desert region of Saudia Arabia.

As promised, we've reached bottom and temperatures will be heading to more springlike, and eventually summer like (60% chance) levels.  Moreover, we see warming at the upper levels of the atmosphere as well, indicating the approach of the Indian Monsoon's circulation pattern, which means that warm upper air atmospheric temperatures will limit cloud formation, as well as any rain.

So, I can safely say that the weather will bring a smile to my wife's face.

It interesting that there is a simple explanation for the weather dichotomy between husband and wife: women are actually from the planet Venus and men are from the planet Mars. The former is quite hot, weather wise (actually, it is believed that all the water on Venus has boiled away), while there is ice on Mars. It is for this reason that women need understanding -- the understanding that having gotten what they wish for they are in actuality, too hot.  On the other hand, men lay it plainly and rationally on the line: if Venus is too hot, come to Mars where you can always put on a jacket and boots (gloves too) to stay warm. In other words, women should be more like men and everything will work out fine, in more ways than one.

Weather It Is (Fire Potential)

Good Evening:

The evening should be pleasant and tomorrow (Thursday) should be generally warm throughout the country.

There will be a dry, easterly wind developing during the night, as well as strong winds, which will lead to elevated wildfire potential. Tomorrow, wind speeds will increase further, as the winds turn westerly.

Temperatures and winds should drop by evening, and Friday should be partly to mostly cloudy with cool temperatures, and even a chance of showers.

Temperatures should stay cool into Sunday, and then warm up into June.

Weather It Is (Summer Heat, Spring Rain)

Good Afternoon:

It's not easy to be married to a weatherman.  How do I know?  My wife used to say to me: "most husbands" would do this or that, and I wasn't included in the list.

What she meant, of course, is that most husbands have a job where being right (or doing the right thing) is part of the job description, and not a hoped for attribute.

Well, I can tell you that this is one of the times where I can be a bit more certain in my forecast.

Today's temperatures have soared into the 30s, but they're not going to last much beyond this evening. Instead, a cool front will pass through our area tonight as a spring storm heads our way.

It looks like there is a  chance of showers tomorrow afternoon, but there is a 100% chance of rain from about Beer-Sheva northward to Metulla from about mid-Monday-Night into Tuesday.  Forecast rain amounts are on the light side, with between 5 and 10 mm in many locations, but > 10 mm up in the northernmost part of the country.

However, a fairly strong  500 mb short wave will pass our way towards dawn on Tuesday and this could trigger some thunderstorms as well. These could add locally to the rain amounts.

The light rain will taper off in the afternoon on Tuesday, and then temperatures should stay cool until the end of the month.

The first week of June looks to return to more summer-like warmth, or at least late spring warmth.

Anyway, I know that I am making progress in the husband department because the other day my wife said to me: "most husbands really are like you...," and she meant it more as a statement rather than a question.

Weather It Is (A Chill, and Then Some)

Good Evening:

There is a chill in the air, and it's not because someone left the refrigerator door open.

Tomorrow, the heat of recent past may seem like a distant memory, as strong, blustery northwest winds usher in air more like winter than spring (let alone summer).

However, by Shabbat we'll start a noticeable upward trend in temperatures that will make us think that the weather is really something to be enjoyed rather than endured.

And, yet, Tuesday of next week could see some spring rain ahead of low pressure moving across the Mediterranean sea.  The low will bring the warm up, but the low will also intensify as another low pressure over western Russia feeds cold air south into its circulation.

While heavy rain is not expected, showers are likely.

For those who are dreaming of summer, the long range forecast shows that the month of May should end on the cool side.

Weather It Is (Independence Day Weather)

Good Afternoon:

Sometimes a husband and wife will exchange very few words. This morning was no exception.

"Decide," she said -- in the imperative command form.

As she shivered in her winter clothes, I knew exactly what she was talking about.

The good news is that there comes a time (sometimes) when a husband can actually do what is requested of him.  Whether he gets the credit... we'll see.

Over the next five days, the weather will be warming up by about 15 C at 850 mb, which means that surface temperatures will most likely be in the 30s by the time the heat breaks Monday night.

The heat will be in response to high pressure nosing its way north and east from Africa.  As we progress through the week and into next, the winds will switch to the southeasterly direction.  On Sunday and Monday, the winds could be quite gusty, raising the spectre of wildfire spread, if such should occur.

The weather mid next week will be much cooler, but not too chilly.

Tzorot Tovot and Hag Yom Ha"Tmahut Samaech,

Weather It Is (A Chill No More, But Missiles in the Air?)

Good Evening:

I have been receiving a number of comments, some complaints, and even encouragement. "Can you keep this cool weather until fall," someone asked? Where's summer, asks the wife?  Me, I thought today's afternoon weather was just outstanding.  There was a warm sun, but cool afternoon temperatures meant that one didn't break a sweat.  Of course, 13 C with a 11 C wind chill this evening meant that there was a chill in the air (and there still is).

Well, no one really cares if the weatherman breaks a sweat or not, and I do have my pride -- so, I have decide that enough is enough (and I want to stay married).

What does this mean for the common folk on the street?  It means that high pressure will start to build over Africa and with it warm weather will return over the next couple of days.  There will be a few days -- mid this coming week -- where we'll hold steady (as an upper level system passes by and brings a few clouds), but then we'll soar upwards to more summer-like temperatures by the end of next week, and there is an even chance it will stay on the warm side into the following week.

This means that Both Yom Zikaron and Yom Ha'Atmahut (Remembrance and Independence Day) should be nice days.  Good days for being outside.

However, the fly in the ointment  is that the border between Gaza and us has become sort of a war zone.  Moreover, the government exported plenty of materials to Gaza that have been turned into tunnels and missiles, so it's possible that Hamas will take advantage of the weather to add its own fireworks to ours.

Why did the government do this?  How else can make themselves relevant (or what better way to stay in power) than to fight a war every couple of years, and then fight the same one two years later, like in the movie Ground Hog day --  over and over again. Of course, I don't really believe this, but the fact that we supply Electricity (and materials) to Gaza that is used to dig, light, and heat their tunnels, as well as to grind the tools that build there missiles has not rational or logical explanation -- at all.

Weather It Is (High Noon)

Good Afternoon:

The wind is blowing and a storm appears to be on the horizon.

However, it is a storm that will bring high heat to many locations.  Along with the heat will come dust, although the dust will be confined mostly to the center and south (with very high concentrations over the south).

The storm will be a fast mover, and its passage Tuesday night will usher in (in contrast) much cooler air.  The dust will also be pushed to the east (the Country of Jordan will probably have a severe dust storm ahead of this storm on Wednesday).  The cooler air (if not chilly air) should last into the end of the week.

There will be the possibility of some light rain as the colder air makes its entrance.  Another storm at the end of the week could bring heavier showers.

Mid-next week will likely see warmer temperatures, if not hot temperatures again, and they should last more than a day.

Have you ever noticed that dogs will eat cat food, but cats won't eat dog food.  In fact, cats won't eat food lying around, while dogs will.

Still, our cats are not as smart as they think they are.  For instance, they won't eat food that has been left in their bowl, but they will eat food that comes out of the plastic container (even though it is the same food).

Sounds crazy, to be sure.

Yet, I made a major step forward in my life when it finally occurred to me (said my mother) that a cat is a cat.  From then on, I stopped trying to control and tame the lions (of the house), and began to work with them.  If they want special food, they get it.  If they want chicken from the oven, they get it. If they want to come in/out, they do.  I am so much more relaxed than I used to be!

But, if you think of it, wives and husbands are not really any different.  For instance, a cat will look at you and say very little -- and yet you are suppose to figure out what it wants.  Don't wives do the same thing?  On the other hand, one can tell a dog a 1000 times not to do something (or vice versa), and yet it seems to have very little effect on behavior.  Aren't husbands really the same?

A cat is discreet.  A cat will preen itself.  A dog will not. It should be clear which is which.

Lastly, it always seems that cats have infinite patience.  They are willing to wait for what they want, and yet they don't cause a ruckus while they do.  On the other hand, our dog will sit in one place, and then sit in another.  It will whine a bit, and grumble in a dog sort of way -- in the hope for a tidbit of this or that.  A dog is always there, underfoot.  Well, husbands....
